Found dead nearly a decade and a half ago Silk Smitha of the steamy dance numbers in ‘south Indian’ films started as a touch-up artist and went on to do wee bit character roles for a while in the late 1970’s. Discovered at a flourmill by a director who gave her the name Smitha, Silk got her legendary sobriquet after the bar dancer she portrayed in Vandi Chakkaram and things were never the same again. Her overtly inescapable sex appeal made it easy for Smitha to transform into Silk Smitha but she couldn’t be anything else after that.

In a career spanning over 450 films Silk Smitha perhaps played the same role over and over again. She might not have been the darling of the critics, who often mistook her for a ‘soft porn’ artist, the public knew a different Silk and many of her films acquired a near cult status. She acted in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi films and sometimes a dance number by her would change destinies. At the height of her career her item number was enough to revive films that lay in can for years; sold with the help of a Silk Smitha number, many films owe seeing the light of the day to her.

It’s this myth, mystery and magic of Silk Smitha that Milan Luthria wants to capture in The Dirty Picture. Based on Silk’s life the film ironically features a respected and much revered National Award winning actor like Vidya Balan portraying the iconic Silk Smitha. Produced by Ekta Kapoor and penned by Rajat Aroraa, The Dirty Picture boasts of an impressive star cast with the likes of Naseeruddin Shah, Emran Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor.

As much as about the people it’s based on, The Dirty Picture claims to be an ode to the era as well. Inspired by the look filmmakers of the period like, the film also takes a little motivation from Paul Thomas Anderson’s look at American porn industry of the 70’s in Boogie Nights. The promo of the film shows Vidya Balan in petticoats minus her signature sarees trying to induce the same nubile mannerisms that Silk Smitha was famous for and Naseeruddin Shah as a maturing actor who refuses to let reality bog him down. The promo is narrated by a character that is portrayed by Hashmi who is peeved enough with Silk to ruin her life.

From the look of it The Dirty Picture revisits the familiar Once Upon a Time in Mumbai terrain. While the latter was reality that couldn’t be tinkered around with beyond a point, this once the imagination can run truly amok. Like Ekta Kapoor commented mainstream press often sidestepped people like Silk Smitha so much of the life story was put together from anecdotes, met-at-a-party stories, quick tea-break chats, and fictionalized them. Besides the lady, who incarnated sex or sleaze depending on how you look at it, The Dirty Picture is also about the unfortunate few for whom the arc lights often led to tragic ends…another thing that Silk Smitha death epitomized.

Nara rohit New Telugu film Solo Movie Review:

Nara is back again with his new film solo.This time also he was entertained the audience very much to his performane.It seems to be solo film worked for rohit very much.

story:
Gowtam (Nara Rohit) is an orphan who works as a software engineer. Since he is an orphan, it’s been his dream to get married to a girl from a joint family. He falls in love with a medical student Vaishnavi (Nisha Agarwal) and comes to know that she has a big family. She is extremely attached to her doting father (Prakash Raj). But he has bad experiences with his sister’s marriage, hence wants to marry off his daughter only to a boy from any big joint family. The rest of the story is all about what happens when he comes to know that his daughter is in love with a solo (no family) guy.

Artist Performance:
Nara Rohith has good looks but he needs to shrug off rigidity in expressions and body language. He was perfect for the role he portrayed in his first film - Baanam but this film needs him to look endearing as it is a family-romantic drama but he is so stoic in many scenes. Nisha Agarwal is good as she has charming looks and also delivers performance in the climax. Savita Reddy has provided voice to her. Pillar of the movie is Prakash Raj; this experienced and multiple times award-winning actor holds the whole drama even in simple scenes. Jayasudha, Pavitra Lokesh, Shayaji Shinde and Ravi are suited well. Ali and M S Narayana provide some good laughter. Srinivas Reddy, Narasimha and others have done justice to their roles.

Technical and Other Departments:
Songs by Mani Sharma are good in parts. Marumallela Vaana song is very good. Dialogues by Parasu Ram are well written and lot of thoughts have gone into writing. There are pretty good fun liners as well as thought-provoking emotional dialogues (especially the way he defines Sukham (body) and Santosham (heart)). Cinematography is alright. Editing is fine. Production values are good.

Movie Analysis:
First half is fun and good. Second half has emotions. The director Parasuram has succeeded in setting up the stage right by the interval. The screenplay in second half is little predictable though the emotions in the climax episode are genuine. The plus points are story orientation and dialogues by Parasuram. On the flip side, a swift and unpredictable second half would have made this movie a special one. On a whole, Solo is a genuine attempt by the director and makes a decent watch if you ignore the lag in second half.

Final View:
Solo has interesting plot line and provides emotional quotient in the second half. A little taut narration in the second half would have made much difference. On the whole, the film is above average family entertainer.

Akshay Kumar New Bollywood Film Desi Boyz Movie Review:
Whenever you hear an actor say, 'This film is different', you know you are in for a run of the mill cliché. However, there are times when their words come as an exception and in case of Desi Boyz it's definitely one, and a pleasant exception at that.

Story and Movie Analysis:
Set against the time financial meltdown across the globe, Desi Boyz is the story of Jignesh Patel a.k.a Jerry Patel (Akshay Kumar), a security guard and Nick Mathur (John Abraham), an investment banker. Life is perfect as the two live happily in their London pad. However, fate takes an ugly turn when the two lose their jobs during recession and face heavy financial problems. While Nick needs money for a happy married life with Radhika Awasthi (Deepika Padukone), Jerry needs financial support to take care of his late sister's son Veer. With no job at hand, the distressed friends turn to being male escorts. How their lives take a turn after that, how Radhika handles Nick's new profession and whether Jerry manages to get Veer back from his foster family or not follows through the rest of the plot.

Desi Boyz may definitely not be a water-tight script neither can it be called an extremely original plot for it seeks 'inspiration' from many a Hollywood films and also an apparent real life story, however, it's the execution of the film that makes one get transported into the lives of the actors. While the first half trudges at snail's pace with a few comic punches here and there, it's the second half that involves all the fun and frolic making for an enjoyable watch.

Debutante filmmaker Rohit Dhawan who happens to be comedy king David Dhawan's son doesn't quite follow the footsteps of his father and saves his film from treading into slapstick regions. Though wavering in the start, Rohit holds the reigns of his film quite well and does bring in a decent blend of story, emotions and humour. There are scenes in Jerry Patel's plot easily picked up from Adam Sandler's films, Billy Maddison being one of them, but they don't quite pinch in the broader scenario and might get unnoticed.

Even the songs in the film don't break in unnecessarily and are perfectly placed in the storyline. Music by Pritam works well with the story of the film and complements the star perfectly, not to mention they already ruling the charts.

Artist Performance:
Akshay Kumar, much against the recent hamming he was accused of in many a comedy films of his, delivers a restrained yet pleasant performance. His chemistry with Chitrangada Singh is sizzling and the two definitely set the screen on fire in one of the salsa scenes though Chitrangada's stand alone character appears very rushed up.

John Abraham exhibits tremendous amount of improvement from his last attempt at comedy with Akshay Kumar in Garam Masala. From a completely clueless and overshadowed actor in Garam Masala to an equivalent of his experienced co-star in Desi Boyz, John has definitely come a long way. His pairing with Deepika Padukone is also refreshing and pleasant.

But what takes the cake in the entire film and probably gives clap-worthy moments to fans is the entry of Sanjay Dutt. Each time he makes entry on to the screen he exudes magnetic charisma with his appearance is also aided by the best punches and dialogues in the entire film.

Technical and Other departments:
Milap Zaveri's lines are witty and sharp. Natrajan Subramaniam's cinematography is eye-filling. The production design is top notch. Pritam's music compliments the mood of the film. The choreography is striking.

Final View:
To sum it up, Desi Boyz despite all flaws provides for wholesome desi entertainment. An enjoyable one time watch specially for Sanjay Dutt's performance! Go for it!
